【今日のスキット】
Ben:
△Hey, are you **** in the bathroom? I think my sunscreen is in there.
===> Hey, are you done in the bathroom? I think my sunscreen is in there.

Makoto:
△Yeah, just *** ** brush my teeth first. Can I borrow your toothpaste?
===> Yeah, just let me brush my teeth first. Can I borrow your toothpaste?

Ben:
△Sure. Go ahead. It's inner somewhere.
===> Sure. Go ahead. It's in there somewhere.

Makoto:
△This must be it. I'll just squeeze a little around the brush, and ...
===> This must be it. I'll just squeeze a little out on the brush, and ...
○Hmm, I've never tasted toothpaste like this before. It's so creamy and ...
===> Hmm, I've never tasted toothpaste like this before. It's so creamy and ...

Ben:
○What's going on in there?
===> What's going on in there?

Makoto:
○I'm brushing with your toothpaste. I haven't seen this brand before.
===> I'm brushing with your toothpaste. I haven't seen this brand before.

Ben:
△What is it say on the label?
===> What does it say on the label?

Makoto:
△Let's see, I can just ****** make it out. ... Here it is. "Sunny Smiles."
===> Let's see, I can just barely make it out. ... Here it is. "Sunny Smiles."

barely かろうじて
「barely」は肯定の意味、「scarcely」は否定の意味を表します。

Ben:
△Uhh, that's my sunscreen. My toothpaste is probably in Judy's ******** bag.
===> Uhh, that's my sunscreen. My toothpaste is probably in Judy's toiletry bag.

【Let's Listen and Write!】
(1) 階段を駆け下りて、どうにかこうにか最終電車に乗れた。
△I round down the stairs and I just barely caught the last train.
===> I ran down the stairs and I just barely caught the last train.

(2) その老人はかろうじて聞こえる声で話した。
△The old man spoke in a voice that was barely *******.
===> The old man spoke in a voice that was barely audible.

(3) 遅れると思ったが、かろうじて時間通りについた。
○I thought I would be late, but I was just barely on time.
===> I thought I would be late, but I was just barely on time.

「遅れると思った」のは到着したのより前なので、「I had thought ?」なのかなと思ったけど、「thought」も「was」も過去形でしたね。
