徹底トレーニング英会話2008年07月29日(火)

【今日のスキット】
Kevin:
○So, Mike Liz, how have you two been doing since we saw you last spring?

Liz:
△We've been doing all right. No news, really. Just the same *** same ***.
===> We've been doing all right. No news, really. Just the same old same old.

「Just the same ols same old」で「相変わらず」というのは初めて知りました。会話ではよく使いそうな表現です。

Mike:
○Yeah, it's been a pretty uneventful summer.
===> Yeah, it's been a pretty uneventful summer.

Liz:
○We did take a vacation, but we didn't do much of anything, really.
===> We did take a vacation, but we didn't do much of anything, really.

Mike:
○As always, we had a few picnics, watched a few movies.
===> As always, we had a few picnics, watched a few movies.
○You know, I'm starting to think that people never really change.
===> You know, I'm starting to think that people never really change.

Liz:
○What have you two been up to?
===> What have you two been up to?

Sharon:
○Lots! In fact, we have a major announcement to make.
===> Lots! In fact, we have a major announcement to make.

Kevin:
○I'm sure it's going to surprise you a lot.
===> I'm sure it's going to surprise you a lot.

(1) 急いで!今日はぐずぐずしてる時間はないんだから。
○Hurry up! I don't have any time to waste today.
===> Hurry up! I don't have any time to waste today.

(2) のどが渇くといけないから飲み水を持ってきたんだ。
△I brought some water to drink in case we got thirsty.
===> I brought some water to drink in case we get thirsty.

水を持ってきたのは過去のことですが、のどが渇く状態になるのはこれから先のことなので、「get thirsty」と現在形です。

(3) 家に着く前にかなりの距離を運転しなくてはいけない。
○We have a lot of miles to drive before we arrive home.
===> We have a lot of miles to drive before we arrive home.
