(3) 受話器が長い間はずれていると、警告音がなって注意してくれる。
○The phone beeps as a reminder that it has been out to hock too long.

hook フック、釣り針
「off the hook」には「フック(釣り針)が外れて」という文字通りの意味とは別に「苦しい立場から抜け出して」という派生した意味もあります。魚の口に引っかかっていた釣り針が外れたイメージです。
